Pure Imagination

My favorite poem was written long before it met the paper.

Pure Imagination

We no longer do we use our imaginations,

Quite as much as we once did

Nothing will ever be the same

Knowing, just this one, kid

We danced to Funkin music.

Escaped from angry bees.

We hatched many animals from eggs.

And gathered kittens from the trees.

No longer do we gather stones.

Nor gather colored leaves.

Frog town no more, we walk the shore

Catching only now the breeze.

Summer days and swimming pools not so deep

Pool noodles no longer swords.

All forgotten and tucked away

In my memories, galore.

Like dragons slain, no longer live.

Evil men are taken care of, too,

My days grow longer without his help.

Not as much, now to do.

Forget, I will not, all those treasured times,

None of them ever planned.

Baseball Park and soccer fields,

Climbers and too much sand.

Roller blades, pinky promises made.

How can things change so much, and then!

Without warning, it comes to pass,

The child becomes a man.

I cannot blame you for growing up.

For once, I did that to

But never thought it would be so tough

To slowly be losing you.

No need for weekend visits now,

Too busy with other things.

Bikes and friends, sleep over weekends

Manhood, it now begins.

Almost overnight, it happened so

And I was not prepared for that.

He is now my grandson, a grown child,

No longer is he my cat.

I pretend it doesn’t matter much.

But fool no one but me.

I wish that we could go once more,

Catch kittens in the trees.

Maybe one day I will go alone,

As together we once did.

Fill sacks of kittens and carry them home on my back.

It was no problem for that kid.

I know he would goff at my memories,

Think them quite silly now for sure.

I only hope one day, he gets to play,

With imagination, just as pure.
